Performance and Fuel Economy

There are two different engine options available on the Highlander, but regardless of which you choose, a six-speed automatic transmission is standard. The base engine, standard only on the base LE trim, is a 2.7L four-cylinder that makes a balanced 185 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, and can tow up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped. This model is offered solely with front-wheel drive. Fuel economy is expected to come in at 24 mpg highway and 20 mpg city, according to EPA estimates.

The LE is also available with a new version of a 3.5L V6 engine that comes standard on all other Highlander trims. If you opt for this engine, you’ll have access to front-wheel or all-wheel drive, as well as an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. Output figures for the new powertrain come in at 295 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque, and it can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. Plus, a Stop and Start Engine System enhance fuel economy, which is rated at up to an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

Critics have given plenty of praise to the 2017 Toyota Highlander:

  • Edmunds: “The 2017 Highlander introduces a series of upgrades that should help it maintain its strong competitiveness in a category that is one of the most active in the industry. Splitting the difference between a minivan and a station wagon, the Highlander continues to offer three rows of seating, plenty of cargo room and a choice between front- or all-wheel drive.”

  • Car and Driver: “Inconspicuous and sensible, the Highlander has what it takes to haul up to eight in quiet comfort. The Highlander provides an adequate driving experience, but it’s more focused on interior niceties and storage.”
