Mechanic looking at a car

Why is My Car Leaking Water?

No one likes pulling into their driveway to find water leaking from under their car. Our Service Department wants to help all of our Las Vegas customers to keep their cars running in top shape. So, we’ve put together the guide below to help you understand why your car is leaking water. The good news is that it may not be as serious as you think. Let’s take a look at what you can do to troubleshoot a leaking car yourself.

Non-Serious Reasons for Water Leaking Under a Car

Is your car leaking water? Maybe not. A puddle doesn’t always indicate a leak. Some of the parts on your car will condensate, and that condensation will sometimes drip on the ground, causing it to appear that water is leaking from under the car. One example is your air conditioner. Water will form on the outside of the condenser when the unit is turned on. You should expect a small puddle of water to appear under your car if you’ve been using the air conditioner.

You may also notice water dripping out of your exhaust from time to time. This also is nothing to worry about, as it is just exhaust condensation that happens in colder weather. So, you may see this from time to time, even though Boulder City winters are generally not as severe as other places.

Leaks That Need Attention

Generally, small amounts of water under your car are not serious. However, if the fluid is colored instead of clear, this is not a sign of a car leaking water, but of a car leaking something else. You should schedule service if this is the case. Here’s a guide to what different colors indicate:

  • Red – Transmission Fluid or Power Steering Fluid
  • Orange – Transmission Fluid or Radiator Coolant
  • Yellow – Radiator Coolant
  • Green – Antifreeze from Water Pump, Hoses, or Radiator
  • Blue – Windshield Wiper Fluid
  • Dark Brown – Brake Fluid or Older Engine Oil
  • Light Brown – Newer Engine Oil or Gear Lubricant
  • Pink – Power Steering Fluid or Transmission Fluid
