2019 Toyota Highlander vs. 2019 Toyota 4Runner: What You Need to Know

If you’ve been searching for a stylish, capable SUV with room for the whole family, comparing the Toyota Highlander vs. Toyota 4Runner is an obvious first step. Both the 2019 Toyota 4Runner and the 2019 Toyota Highlander are reliable, powerful, and well-equipped, but which one has everything you need for your Pahrump and Mesquite drives?

Performance and Fuel Economy: Highlander vs. 4Runner

Almost no one chooses a new SUV without considering performance. Although the Highlander is best-suited for longer commutes, drivers who want the ability to go off-road will likely find more to love in the 4Runner.

  • Highlander: The 2019 Highlander can be equipped with either a 2.7L 4-cylinder engine or a 3.5L V6 engine. The 4-cylinder engine offers up to 20 mpg city, 24 city mpg highway. The V6 does even better with 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. Several Hybrid trims are also available!
  • 4Runner: Every 4Runner receives a 4.0L V6 DOHC 24-Valve engine designed with Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). Most models get an EPA estimated 17 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, although equipping part-time or full-time 4WD will have an impact.

The maximum Highlander towing capacity and the maximum 4Runner towing capacity are equal to one another. However, only the 4Runner offers a 5,000-pound capacity in its baseline trim.

Standard Features and Technology: 4Runner vs. Highlander

Both the 2019 Highlander and the 2019 4Runner offer highly desirable technology features, including Entune™ Audio Plus, a 6.1-in. high-resolution touchscreen, and an integrated back-up camera with projected path. Still, upon closer inspection, you’ll have no trouble telling them apart:

  • With the 4Runner, you’ll receive a standard leather-wrapped steering wheel, a standard power driver’s seat with lumbar support, and fog lamps–all included in the base trim. Although many of these features can be accessed in the Highlander, you’ll need to upgrade to receive them.
  • In contrast to the 4Runner, the 2019 Toyota Highlander offers standard Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS P) in every trim. Although you’ll need to upgrade to enjoy more advanced interior features, even the baseline trim will provide peace of mind on every drive.

No less significantly, the 2019 Toyota Highlander interior comes standard with three rows of seating, and room for up to eight passengers. The 4Runner only comes standard with room for five, although a third-row seat is available in every trim.
